If you want a well-managed business the order of priority has to be this: systems run your business, people run your systems, you lead your people.
It starts with systems because if people run your business, as people come and go, so does your business, your business will fluctuate on the strength or availability of the people that you’ve hired. If you have great people, that’ll likely work. But the difficulty with that is that ultimately that approach, that methodology fails.
Let me give you an example.
If you’re the captain of a boat in the Navy, let’s say it’s 50 feet and you have a crew of 10. Well, you can meet every one of those crew twice a day, and you can communicate your expectations or communicate what needs to be done. Now let’s make you the captain of a 150-foot boat and now there are 50 people. Well, now it’s much more difficult to meet everyone in the business, everyone on the boat every day to communicate your expectations down to the individual personal level. It’s not possible to do that anymore.
So how do you replace your contact with each of these people?
The system is what becomes your replacement and that includes how people behave with your customers and behave with each other. And part of that system, by the way, is the culture that you create as a business owner.
